Informus - digital twins to reduce carbon and maximise biodiversity
What is it?
Informus is a digital twin that delivers decision support enabling the minimisation of carbon and maximisation of biodiversity for infrastructure. Informus delivers a single point of truth to unite stakeholders at every stage of a project from concept through delivery to long term maintenance. Informus is built on three pillars:
Baselines
We create trusted and robust baselines bringing together disparate data sources to provide you with the best possible understanding of the situation on the ground.
Modelling
Ability to run data driven scenarios quickly and easily and drive better decision-making internally throughout the project lifecycle. Understanding the potential impacts of planting strategies, green / blue infrastructure, habitat restoration, material choices, sequestration, and construction methods at key decision points throughout the project will help drive the best possible outcome. Set your KPIs and let informus do the heavy lifting.
Monitoring
Long term monitoring capabilities to align planned vs actual and ensure that projects deliver benefits over the long term. Employing a mix of physical and digital monitoring all combined in a simple to deploy 30yr package.
Why are we doing this?
Infrastructure construction and maintenance accounts for 16% of the UK’s carbon emissions and we have lost over 50% of our biodiversity since the industrial revolution.
Although national policy provides a framework for change, and many authorities have declared climate emergencies, decision making on the frontline is hampered by poor data, information flows, siloed processes and a lack of accessible scenario modelling.
This needs to change. Where infrastructure needs to be built informus will unite stakeholders through common data, provide accurate scenario modelling and ensure end to end communications and information flows
Data Driven
Living Infrastructure
What is it?
We’ve created a mobile living wall test rig, IoT sensors and data analytics suite to inform an evidence base for the effectiveness of small scale green infrastructure on air quality, cooling and biodiversity uplift. We’re also making designs, tech and engagement tools open source so that communities can develop to suit their needs and share best practice.
Why are we doing this?
Adding green infrastructure can bring many benefits through air quality improvement, cooling, biodiversity uplift and mental wellbeing but it can often be overwhelming task knowing where to start and where to deliver maximum impact.
Based on our work with Staffordshire / Oxfordshire County Councils and our ongoing project with Swindon Borough Council we want to to help organisations form an evidence base, identify key locations, design and deploy green infrastructure and engage with communities to truly leverage benefits.
We’ve created a programme that will help you discover how green infrastructure ( from living walls / roofs, re-wilded verges, hedge / trees planting, rain gardens and much more) can improve place making, support climate ambitions and policy, improve quality of life for communities and support local businesses.
Climate Interchange
What is it?
A Free to access online community for sharing knowledge, projects, learnings and best practice in developing and adopting climate adaptation solutions across the public sector. This is a joint initiative between Sandwell Council and Better Futures supported by MySociety.
Why are we doing this?
Mitigation won’t solve our problems alone and the effects of climate change will impact communities for decades to come. Whilst there have been some successful solutions these are not commonly shared and there is currently no dedicated central resource for adaptation.
By coming together as a community we can meet this challenge by sharing what works and what doesn’t, pooling our knowledge and resources, building on the work that has already been done and sharing challenges to find common solutions. We can think big and act locally.
Get Involved
Tell us what you’d find useful to have as a resource, what data and information you’d find helpful.
Most of all we need you to share your knowledge, projects and challenges with your peers to that we can all come together as a community to meet our shared goal of adapting to the effects of climate change.
Please drop us a line here and we’ll get in touch so that you can have your say in shaping Climate Interchange.
Rural
Transport
Working with InnovateUK, The Strategic Liaison Group, LCRIG and the Transport Technology Forum ( DfT) we are developing a knowledge sharing programme to showcase ways in which Local Councils are tackling rural transport challenges.
This is an open forum to share best practice, lessons learnt and ideas with regular meetings and a yearly, in person symposium.
